  • Who is Swell for?

Swell is an online investing platform that aims to deliver profit as well as purpose. We do the heavy lifting to identify companies that are both making an impact in the world and poised for growth – so that anyone can invest in them. We require individuals to be 18 years or older and have a citizenship/residency status with the US in order to open an account.

  • Is Swell a mutual fund?

Swell's portfolios are separately managed accounts. Each thematic portfolio contains companies hand selected by our portfolio manager. When you invest in a portfolio, you are buying stock in those companies.

Additionally, in a Swell account, you have a greater level of customization: If you see a name that you'd rather not have in your portfolio you may remove it (we allow you to remove up to 3 holdings from your portfolios). You can make changes anytime you wish. Swell investors are shareholders of the companies in their portfolios, which means that they are able to vote on shareholder resolutions and even attend annual meetings if they care to.

  • What Is Swell Investing?

Swell is an online investing platform that aims to deliver profit as well as purpose. We do the heavy lifting to identify companies that are both making an impact in the world and poised for growth so that nearly everyone can invest in them.

Visit our homepage to learn more and check out our “Meet Swell” video. It’s our way of saying hi to you and the world.

  • How much does Swell cost?

We have tried to keep our pricing as straight-forward as possible. When you invest with Swell, you pay 0.75% per year, plus FINRA’s mandatory Self Regulatory Organization (SRO) fee which is much less than a penny ($0.0000231 per dollar of sales.)

What this means is that you’ll be billed at the end of each month based on the average daily balance of your Swell account from the preceding month. For example, if you invest $500, you’ll pay just 31 cents per month in fees. We don’t charge for trading fees; there are no pricing tiers and absolutely zero hidden expenses.

  • Am I buying into a fund?

No, you are not. When you open an account with Swell, you are opening your own individual investment account. Any cash you deposit into your Swell account is invested into a "mix" of your choice of our six portfolios, each comprised of equity securities.

Having an investment account gives you the ability to customize your investment mix so that you can be invested in what you care about. It also gives you the ability to make changes to your account whenever you want, unlike a fund. For more information on how a Swell portfolio differs from a fund, please see here

  • What is the minimum amount required to invest on Swell?

Swell requires an initial minimum account balance of $50. We won’t penalize you if market performance causes your account to dip below $50, but if you choose to withdraw an amount that will take your account below the minimum, we will ask that you either skip the withdrawal or close your account.

For IRA accountholders, you may transfer an existing brokerage account or rollover a defined contribution plan (i.e., a 401(k) or 403(b)). This requires a bit more legwork; please get in touch with our support team for help: support@swellinvesting.com or 949-566-8985.

  • Is Swell regulated?

Yes, it is. Swell is registered as an investment adviser with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (the SEC). Please view our Form ADV, our registration form with the SEC, for more information. (Our legal team wants to remind you, registration does not imply a certain level of skill or training.)

  • How old do I have to be to open an account?

You must be 18 years old to open an account with Swell.

  • Is Swell a fiduciary?

Yes. We have a fundamental obligation to act in the best interest of our clients. As a fiduciary, we owe our clients undivided loyalty and we may not engage in activity that conflicts with a client's interest without his or her consent.

  • Why the name Swell?

It just has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Swell, the name, refers to our social mission, our focus on long term financial growth, and our company origins. Swell means good. Swell means growth. Swell nods to our California roots and the oceanic heritage of our parent company, Pacific Life, which has provided trusted financial services for nearly 150 years.

  • What does “Backed by Pacific Life” mean?

It means we have the best of both worlds: The agility of a startup paired with the expertise of a financial service company. Swell is a subsidiary of Pacific Life Insurance Company (“Pacific Life”), an insurance company with 150 years of expertise in providing a wide variety of insurance, financial services and other investment-related businesses.

Additionally, Pacific Life provided Swell with a seed investment in all of Swell’s portfolios. (Pacific Life does not and will not provide any financial guarantee of Swell or its products and services.)
