  • I want to link my bank. What do I do if I can’t find my bank?

We support automatic bank linking for over 1,500 banks and community credit unions through our partner, Plaid. If your bank is not on the list, we’ll need to make sure you own that account by having you confirm two random micro-deposits from our clearing firm, Folio Investments.

Select the option "can’t find your bank." You will then be asked to enter your bank account information. Once you have input your information, log into your bank account to find the two small random amounts. It can take up to three days for these small amounts -- between 1 and 50 cents each -- to appear in your account.

Once you have received the micro-deposits, please log in to your Swell account and input the values of the deposits. After confirming your account, Swell is able to transfer your money electronically and you can make additional deposits at any time.

Please note that any small deposits sent to your bank account for verification purposes will be withdrawn from that bank account within 10 business days.

  • I used a promo code. When will the funds hit my account?

Promotional deposits will be deposited into your cash balance within 5-7 business days of your first investment. Once they arrive, you can invest them into your mix by logging in to your account and selecting the "Invest" option from the "Manage Mix" dropdown on the navigation bar. Once you do, you'll see an option to invest from your account's cash balance (where the funds will be sitting).

  • Can I use Venmo or Paypal to fund my account?

We would love to accept PayPal or Venmo as we ourselves use those tools, but for security purposes (for your benefit, really), we can only accept bank links as they are transmitted to us in the most secure fashion and protected in ways that new services like Venmo and PayPal are not.

  • How long does it take to invest my cash?

Your cash can be invested as soon as it arrives to your Swell account. If the funds arrive after the market is closed for the day, it will be invested the following business day.

  • How do I fund my account?

Swell currently supports bank transfers via Automated Clearing House (ACH) as a method of funding accounts. ACH is an electronic network for financial transactions in the United States that lets you move funds directly between a checking or savings account and your Swell account, similar to the way you receive direct deposits from your employer. You can link your bank directly via Plaid or by using microdeposits.

More about the two ways to verify and link your bank account:

    1) Bank account verification via Plaid (direct bank link): Swell has partnered with Plaid, a third party platform for quickly and safely verifying bank account information. After you input your username and password for your bank account, Swell will retrieve your bank account and routing numbers, as well as your current balance (“Account Information”) via Plaid.

Swell will not store your username or password for your bank account. Plaid will provide Swell an access token that exclusively allows Swell to retrieve your Account Information. All information transmitted between Plaid and Swell is encrypted over a 256-bit Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and secured with bank level protection. All information Swell receives from Plaid will be governed by Swell's Privacy Policy

By using Plaid through Swell, you agree to the above terms and further agree to hold Swell harmless from losses of any kind that may result from Plaid’s use, misuse, or loss of your personal information and Account Information.

To learn how Plaid uses and protects your information, please see Plaid’s Privacy Policy.

    2) Bank account verification via micro-deposits: In order to link your bank account to your Swell account through micro-deposits, we must verifiy that we are linking the correct account. After entering your routing and account numbers, you should receive two deliberately random micro-deposits (between $0.01 and $0.50) from our clearing firm, Folio Investments into your bank account. This usually takes up to three days. Once these micro-deposits have arrived in your bank account, please log in to your Swell account to confirm the values of the random deposits. You will then be able to complete your initial deposit into your Swell account. Please note that any small deposits sent to your bank account for verification purposes will be withdrawn from that bank account within 10 business days.

  • How do I set up a recurring deposit?

You can set up a recurring deposit by logging in to your Swell account and selecting "Recurring Investment" from the "Manage Mix" dropdown in the navigation bar. There, you will be prompted to enter (or edit) the dollar amount and frequency of your recurring investment.

  • Do you accept international bank accounts?

Swell currently accepts bank transfers from US-based financial institutions only. Deposits originating from foreign banks or brokerage firms will be returned. We will be adding other funding options in the future; stay tuned!

  • Can I fund my IRA directly through my paycheck?

Not at the moment -- you need to link your bank account to your Swell account and set up a deposit. However, rollovers and account transfers can be used to fund your IRA. If you would like to rollover or transfer an existing retirement account, please reach out to our support team at support@swellinvesting.com.

  • Can I choose how much money goes in each portfolio?

Yes, while you're setting up your account, you will be asked to create your own portfolio "mix" , during which you choose how you want your money distributed via percentage. Later, you can edit your mix and change your allocations. On a one-time basis, you can either invest according to your pre-set mix, or edit the percentages to reflect your revised allocations for this investment.

  • What is my account number?

You can find your account number by logging in to your Swell account and selecting "Settings & Info" from the navigation bar on the top of the page. Next, select the "Manage Accounts" option from the dropdown. Your account number(s), account type(s) and your Folio username will be listed on the following page.

  • Why is the minimum $50?

This is the minimum amount we can invest and effectively spread across all of our portfolios. The low minimum is possible because Swell uses fractional shares to make sure that all of the money you’ve allocated for investment is actually invested.
