Help Center

  • What information do I need to provide to open an account?

We are obligated to collect the following information in order to provide Swell users with financial services:

    -US Residential Address
    -Social Security Number
    -Date of Birth
    -Citizenship/residency status
    -Employment status

In addition, we ask some users about their current investment assets, risk tolerance and investment time horizon in order to determine suitability for investing in Swell and to meet SEC reporting requirements.

  • What is account verification? Why am I being asked for additional documents?

When you apply to open a brokerage account with Swell, we will work with our broker-dealer, Folio Institutional, to confirm some of your personal information, including your email address, social security number, and physical address. This is to ensure that you are the person registering for a Swell investment account.

  • How long does it take to open an account and be fully invested?

Depending on what day in the week you open your account, it can take between 4-8 business days for your account to be activated and fully invested in your selected portfolio mix.

  • How do I add a beneficiary to my account?

Email our Investor Relations team at -- we'll walk you through it.

  • Can Non-US citizens open a Swell account?

We're working hard to bring Swell to everyone, but our broker-dealer's policy currently requires all account holders to have a permanent US residential address, as well as a Social Security number or US Tax Identification Number -- in other words, we can only take on permanent residents and U.S citizens. Unfortunately, this does not include those here on a student or work visa. We're working hard to be able to offer products to international customers but unfortunately, do not have an eta on when that might be.

Please take a look at our blog and check it now and again, it's where any such product updates will be voiced.

  • Why do I need to submit my Social Security number and address?

Although our aim is to bring Swell to everyone, we can only provide financial services to citizens or permanent residents of the United States at this time. A (ssn) social security number and permanent address help us to establish this information.

  • How do I add a beneficiary to my account?

If you would like to add or edit your beneficiary on file, please email us at

  • Will Swell check my credit when I sign up?

Swell does not check your credit or pull any information that would affect your credit score. Your social security number is not stored by Swell and is only used to verify your identity.

  • Why am I being asked about my job status and employer?

This information helps us to verify your identity and is required by law in order to provide financial services.
